Product description

If you currently have a personal computer running Windows 8 standard edition, then you can upgrade to Windows 8 Pro (Professional). With Windows 8 Pro, you can connect and share your files. Windows 8 Pro also adds enhanced features if you need to connect to company networks, access remote files, encrypt sensitive data, and other more advanced tasks.

The new Windows 8 start screen is your personalized home for items you use the most and can be customized according to your user preferences. Windows 8 Live tiles provide real-time updates from your Facebook, Twitter, and e-mail accounts. Along with the new Start screen, the lock screen now includes e-mail, calendar, and clock widgets.

To access your PC, Microsoft has replaced a standard PIN or password with a swipe gesture; unlock your PC by clicking or swiping preset locations you’ve selected on the lock screen. New functions also allow you to search for your favorite software programs, open, close, hide, resize, or run multiple apps simultaneously with the swipe of a finger or a swipe of the mouse.

Windows has also made changes to make your PC more secure by boosting its existing security features and adding "SmartScreen," which acts to prevent suspicious programs or apps from being installed or running on your machine. Finally, Windows 8 also gives you the ability to "refresh" itself to give users a new starting point and a cleaner version of Windows.

You can upgrade to Windows 8 from Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP, Windows 8 Release Preview, Windows 8 Consumer Preview, or Windows Developer Preview, but you might not be able to keep all of your files, software programs, and settings. The following table shows what you can keep during an upgrade, depending on the current version of Windows you are running. If you choose to boot from removable media, you won’t be able to keep your software programs, Windows settings, or personal files when you upgrade.

Upgrading from: What you can keep: Windows 8 Preview Personal files Windows 8 Developer Preview Nothing, but your old files will be saved in the "windows.old" folder Windows 7 Software programs; Windows settings; personal files Windows Vista Windows settings; personal files Windows XP Personal files

I HAVE FOLLOWED THE 'GET STARTED' INSTRUCTIONS BUT MICROSOFT WILL NOT ACCEPT THE PRODUCT KEY SO IT APPEARS THAT I HAVE PURCHASED A FAULTY PRODUCT. ALSO, THE WEBSITE INDICATES THAT UNTIL JANUARY 2012 MICROSOFT WILL PROVIDE THE PRO PACK FREE TO PURCHASERS LIKE ME OF THE WINDOWS 8 OS ........ SO I NEEDN'T HAVE BOUGHT THE KEY IN THE FIRST PLACE.

My reason for upgrading was only to be able to downgrade legally to win7. The key i obtained didnt work, each time i tried to activate error message appeared stating one of characters in middle of key(letter n) was unacceptable so i had to contact support twice spending about half an hour each time dealing over phone before i was given different key alltogether. I was actually considering contacting amazon back for moneyreturn as all windows 8 features r joke besides fact there was no instalation/ recovery disc included which i'd really appreciate im not fan of electronic copies at all regardless they dont work as they should. I only got it sorted last week. Im not saying its amazons fault but all win8 is really great value os!!

Beware that adding Windows 8 Pro Pack does not give you the same result as a pure Windows 8 Pro installation. In particular, 'Remote Desktop Connection' (one of my primary reasons for purchasing Windows 8 Pro Pack) does not work correctly for non-administrative users, whereas apparently it works fine for a pure Windows 8 Pro installation (precisely because 'Windows 8' + 'Pro Pack' gives you a different OS configuration to 'Windows 8 Pro').

This is a bug in the Pro Pack (which will doubtless be fixed in due course), but I wonder how many other differences there are between 'Pro Pack' and a pure 'Pro' installation?

My wife bought me a new Laptop for christmas, and it came with the newest Windows 8 release as its operating system, however it was just the basic user version, ie, didnt have windows media center or bit locker software, 2 programnes i use often, but this product was an easy fix and very cheap. I would recommend this if you want to update your basic windows 8 operating system, to Windows 8 pro version. Warning you will need to have the basic version of windows already on your PC or Laptop. Or this waont work, ie, you can not use this to upgrade from windows 7. For that you need to buy the full version of Windows 8, which is quite a bit more expensive. This was an easy product to use, what you get is basicly a new operating system KEYCODE, and on your home screen just type in "add new windows features" and click on settings and you will be asked if you want to buy a new KEYCODE, or I already have a New KEYCODE, you will click the second option, and just enter the code that came in the box, it will then check the code, via the internet, and after verfying the code is genuine, it will proceed to install your newest features making your win 8 basic, win 8 pro. it only takes about 25mins from start to finish and doesnt require a great deal of computer knowledge, it is simply click and install, very easy to do at home. Hope this has helped, Enjoy!!!

If you are upgrading to Windows 8 PRO a good product some £30 cheaper than high street stores. On the downside not much information to go on, literature is very basic

Simple to install, PC performance has improved so much from my former OS - XP that for me it is definitely worth it.
Not entirely convinced about the desktop/start split but probably look back in a month's time and wonder what all the fuss was about.
